Known for having shallow waters and no undertow, Fort Myers Beach is surrounded by safe beaches for families to frolic at and enjoy the laidback atmosphere. Spend time relaxing or get adventurous and try paddle boarding and parasailing. Catch some rays at Bowman’s Beach, Fort Myers’ most popular stretch of sand and an area favorite for shells, swimming, and sunning. Bowditch Point Park is another busy beach destination that offers great swimming alongside a nature preserve.
While it may be difficult to leave your beautiful sandy surroundings, a don't-miss attraction in the city is the Edison & Ford Winter Estates, a sprawling 20-acre estate with tropical gardens, Thomas Edison's laboratory, and a museum brimming with inventions, artifacts, and exhibits.
If you love outdoors activities, head to nearby Lovers Key, a barrier island where you can engage in biking, hiking, kayaking, wildlife viewing, and shelling on the unspoiled beaches. For seashell lovers, venture to Sanibel Island where you can collect shells, take a shelling excursion boat to other islands, and visit the Bailey-Matthews Shell Museum featuring over 30 exhibits of shells from around the world.
For a special nature experience, the Six Mile Cypress Slough is a 2,500-acre wetland that measures nine miles long and a third of a mile wide with at least ten different species of endangered animals and plants.
Golf enthusiasts enjoy a lengthy menu of courses in the area that is highlighted by Fort Myers, FL Country Club, designed by celebrated Scottish architect Donald Ross, Eastwood Golf Course, a Bruce Devlin/Robert von Hagge design, and Eagle Ridge Golf Club, a layout framed by native pine and cypress trees dotted with lakes and waterways.
Don’t forget to visit the Fort Myers Beach Fishing Pier. Stretching 560 feet into the Gulf of Mexico, the pier is a popular place for fishing or taking in a gorgeous sunset. To get out on the water, charter one of the area’s many deep sea fishing adventures, which will take you out for a half day, a full day, or a night. Catch mackerel, grouper, or even sharks, and cook up your catch afterwards.
At Ostego Bay Marine Science Center the whole family will be entertained with educational interactive displays and aquarium exhibits of marine life. Catch a glimpse of animals seldom seen by vacationers, and visit during feeding time when reclusive creatures emerge to eat.
To learn more about the intriguing history of the Fort Myers area, don’t miss the Southwest Florida Museum of History, which shows visitors how original Native American inhabitants lived alongside European settlers. The Calusa Nature Center and Planetarium is another family friendly spot and hosts laser shows to teach visitors about stars and planets.
