New Smyrna Beach is split in two by the Indian River, part of the Intracoastal Waterway. Nearly all of its rentals are on the beachside, the barrier island facing the ocean. The mainland side holds the New Smyrna Beach Historic District, about 5 minutes over the North Causeway from Flagler Avenue, along with a few rentals that are a drive from the ocean. From Smyrna Dunes Park at the north end to Canaveral National Seashore at the south end is about 25 minutes by car, so the whole stretch is easy to explore from any rental.
Drive times are from the beach end of Flagler Avenue.
DAB is about 35 minutes from Flagler Avenue, with flights on Delta, American, Avelo, and Breeze. Orlando International (MCO) is about 1 hour 10 minutes on a tolled route, and Orlando Sanford (SFB) is about 50 minutes.
No cars go on the sand until the monitors finish their survey. Visitors pay a daily vehicle fee or buy an annual pass. From May through October, cars are allowed 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. (or sundown, if earlier), and sunrise to sunset the rest of the year. Ramps close at high tide.
Visitors pay a daily fee to drive onto the beach, and the city’s beachfront lots charge by the day, too. A rental you can walk to the sand from skips both, every day of the stay. If you’re looking on the mainland or a few blocks back, ask the owner how far the nearest beach access is.
During sea turtle nesting season, lights visible from the beach must be shielded, turned off, or curtained. In an oceanfront condo, that means drawing the curtains after dark. Outside city limits, Volusia County applies its rule all season, whether or not a nest is near your building.
