Getting around
If you’re spending a few days to a week here, consider renting a car from the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport on arrival. There’s ample beach parking and when staying in a rental, you’ll probably have a driveway. The majority of the city is on a standard north-south grid. Note: "avenues" run north-south and "streets" run east-west.
Tired of sitting behind the wheel? Enjoy the comfort of a water taxi. Fort Lauderdale has waterways throughout the city (part of the Intercoastal Waterway) and they provide a fun way of getting around. A fleet of water taxis travels along the Intracoastal and downtown New River stopping at 12 points of interest in Fort Lauderdale and three in Hollywood. You can hop on and off the boats all day.
Not heading near a waterway? Try the local public transit. Sun Trolley operates service with routes along the beach and through downtown, as well as to Las Olas Boulevard (all routes are free except for the Las Olas and Beach Link Routes.
Lastly, you can also get around by bike via Broward BCycle, a bike-sharing program with stations located throughout the city. Bike rentals cost $5 per 30 minutes.
Top activities and attractions
Fort Lauderdale is all about the beach. Fort Lauderdale Beach, in particular, welcomes thousands of sun-hungry visitors every single day. They keep coming back for the sugar white sands, warm blue waters, and plenty of space to spread your blanket. A second favorite spot for sun is Las Olas Beach, which has classic Florida palm trees.
Speaking of Las Olas, the best shopping is on Las Olas Boulevard. Cruise this popular retail strip with plenty of eateries, souvenir shops, clothing stores, and more. Kids will also love the 15th Street Fisheries with a restaurant, fish to feed, and a beautiful marina to explore. Known as the “Style Mile”, all budget levels will enjoy a trip here.
With geographic proximity on the Atlantic coast, the gulfstream current passes just two miles offshore. That means the waters are warm, and there’s plenty to do on the ocean. Charter a deep sea fishing boat, or take surf lessons with the family. Try your hand at boogie boarding and Jet-Skis. A glass-bottom boat tour will show you the undersea wildlife from a perspective you’ve never imagined.
For families on vacation, you’ll love a trip to Boomer’s amusement park (complete with bumper boats, go-karts, and laser tag) or Funderdome (an indoor playground with spiral slide and ropes course).
For activites off-beach, the Flamingo Gardens are the oldest botanical garden in Southern Florida, and home to the Everglades Sanctuary and the Wray Botanical Garden Collection. A number of rare or unique to Florida species call the Sanctuary home, including flamingos, alligators, and otters.
Dining
With all the action here, you’re going to work up an appetite. Thankfully, this area has amazing restaurants for each meal of the day. For a killer brunch, try The Foxy Brown which features five-star service and inventive dishes. For a more traditional breakfast, stop in to the Village Cafe, and for a breakfast that’s more like a party, try a meal at Ocean2000.
When lunch rolls around you won’t find a better sandwich than at Laspada’s Hoagies. If you’re a burger family, try the fare at Gilbert’s 17th Street Grill. Lastly, for the pizza lovers on vacation here, eat a pie from Dolce Solato Pizza & Gelato - any toppings will do!
On to dinner. For your evening meal book a table at Premiere Bar which is a gastropub serving all types of cuisine. The reviews here are outstanding! For an Italian meal, eat at La Dolce Vita. And of course, the city serves up delicious seafood at most restaurants. The absolute best is Wild Sea. Yum!
