Perdido Key is compact, but where you stay changes the feel of your trip. The Theo Baars Bridge lands just east of the main cluster of condo rentals. Perdido Key State Park lies farther west, and Gulf Islands National Seashore runs along the eastern end.
Pensacola International (PNS) is the closest major airport to Perdido Key. Destin-Fort Walton Beach Airport (VPS) is about 90 minutes away, so compare fares and schedules before choosing an airport.
The dunes provide habitat for the endangered Perdido Key beach mouse and other wildlife. Use the boardwalks and designated beach access points rather than walking through the dunes. Remember to leave sea oats undisturbed since cutting them is against Florida law.
Nesting season runs May through October. Most nests are loggerheads, with green turtles, leatherbacks and the occasional Kemp’s ridley. The county asks guests to close the curtains at night and keep white lights off the beach, so hatchlings head for the water.
The Perdido Key Area of Gulf Islands National Seashore can close when it reaches capacity from April through September. The entrance opens at 5 a.m., so an early start can help you avoid closure.
