Dunedin is a gem on the Gulf
Located along the Gulf Coast, just west of Tampa, Dunedin is known for its annual Scottish celebrations and its quaint downtown. One of the oldest towns on Florida’s west coast, Dunedin has a wooded and subtropical setting with almost four miles of picturesque waterfront, a relaxed lifestyle, and activities for all ages, making Dunedin a wonderful place to visit. In Dunedin, you will find a charming and active downtown, beautiful parks, recreational activities, history, culture and educational opportunities. Also, just off the coast are Caladesi and Honeymoon Islands, both renowned for their unspoiled beauty.
When staying in one of our Dunedin vacation rentals instead of a traditional hotel, you’ll have much more space and privacy, plus cost savings when booking a property for a large group. Some of our rentals even come with special amenities like a backyard pool, washer/dryer units, and bicycles. Whether you’re looking for a beach condo with amazing views, or a larger home for space for the entire family, you can find it on our site.
Dunedin, Florida travel advice
To get to the Dunedin area from afar, fly to the St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport, which is just 12 miles south of most Dunedin condos, or fly to the Tampa International Airport, which is about 20 miles east of the area.
Climate
Pack your swim trunks and sunglasses! Dunedin enjoys nearly 250 sunny days each year, and the city receives an average of two and a half to three inches of rain each month. Summers tend to be hot and humid in Dunedin, with highs in the 90s. Winters tend to be warm, with temperatures in the 60s or 70s. Hurricane season lasts from June to November and could have a negative impact on a carefully planned family vacation. If traveling during this time, keep flashlights, a battery-operated radio, and other supplies on hand and heed all advisories and warnings.
Top activities and attractions in Dunedin
Ready to swim? Just offshore you’ll find Honeymoon Island State Park where there’s plenty of beachfront for swimming and sunbathing. Walk along the sand and pick up shells. You can also fish, canoe, kayak and hike on trail with excellent bird watching. If you’d like to be even more active, the Pinellas Trail, a 39-mile long bicycle and pedestrian trail that traverses all of Pinellas County, bisects downtown Dunedin. Bicyclists are a common sight in the business district.
For those who prefer the finer things stop in to the Dunedin Fine Art Center for a special exhibit, or just to grab a bite at the gourmet cafe. History buffs will love the Dunedin Historical Society and Museum, located in an original train station. Study how the area shifted from cotton to citrus over 2000 artifacts (some being over 200 years old).
Adventure lovers can take a trip to Anclote Key Preserve State Park, which provides facilities for primitive style camping, surrounded by more than 43 different types of birds. It also has a 19th century lighthouse and a 4-mile long beachfront.
Annual Events
There are a handful of annual events in Dunedin worth your time on vacation. The Dunedin Art Festival takes place in January. Along Dunedin’s Main Street, you will meet some of the country’s finest crafters with products all handmade in the U.S.A. Botanical hotplates, ceramic planters, functional pottery, hair accessories, handmade one-of-a-kind jewelry pieces and an expansive Green Market offers something for every taste & budget.
The Orange Festival in July is a ton of fun. Live music, dancing, auctions, contests, and plenty of oranges to celebrate Dunedin’s storied history of citrus. The most delicious festival of the year! November is a time to celebrate Celtic music and ancestry by attending the annual Dunedin Celtic Festival. Also don’t miss the Highland Games and Mardi Gras Festival, both of which put Dunedin on the map!
Restaurants and Bars
Bring your appetite to Dunedin! There are dozens of restaurants and bars we consider “must try” while you’re in the area, so start planning. If you’re looking for fancier fare, the #1 rated restaurant in the area is known as “The Black Pearl”. Try the risotto and bolognese, both of which are known to leave patrons smiling. People have described the pastrami sandwich at Cafe Alfresco as “the best sandwich in the entire world”, no joke! This popular cafe also comes at a fair price point. If you’re in the mood for seafood, the Lucky Lobster Co. is always the right choice. The freshest seafood served up with great customer service.
OK, now let’s talk about drinks. If you’re into brews the Dunedin House of Beer has almost one hundred options. Try a pint or two on your next trip. Locals love to end the night at The Pinehurst Pub which has just enough old school entertainment to keep your night going.
