Area Information

Steinhatchee Florida is the perfect combination of old Florida mixed with new amenities for you to enjoy. The boathouse retreat offers you the opportunity to stay put and enjoy all there is on the property, or venture out to the amazing town of Steinhatchee. There you find old Florida small mom-and-pop restaurants and beautiful new marinas and amenities depending on what your preferences are. Just South in Cross City there is a small airport for private planes to fly into and the Suwanee River is also just south in the same area, and don’t forget to explore the Big Bend area of Florida.
Approximately an hour and a half north you also find the capital of Florida, Tallahassee. There you can explore the State Capital as well as Florida State University and Florida A&M University.
You will never be bored at the boathouse retreat, unless of course you want to be.

Attractions Within Walking Distance

Walking distance is a relative term at the Boathouse retreat. Our driveway is 1.1 miles through Florida wetlands, teeming with wildlife. But there are bicycles, and the town is only a couple miles away. The solitude of the boathouse retreat is complemented by the quick access to the old Florida town of Steinhatchee, where you go back in time to the way Florida used to be.

Favorite Places To Eat

There are so many amazing places to eat and visit in the area that we keep on ongoing list in our guestbook and online with specials and hours depending on the season. Scalloping season over the summer and the fiddler crab Festival in February are the two major draws to Steinhatchee Florida. The area offers everything from high-end restaurants, to mom-and-pop restaurants, to gas stations with the most amazing diners, to stationary food trucks that offer gourmet selections, and even an old-school smoky bar.

Inside Scoop

The town of Steinhatchee Florida is a local’s town, that offers the most welcoming spirit you will ever feel. Whether they know you are not, you are greeted with open arms and you feel a true sense of being welcomed into the town. You truly feel this at one restaurant called Kathy’s crab shack, the owner and his best friend are there every evening and come by your table to sit down and just see how things are going. They also personally cook each steak outback on a big Green egg and invite you to help out and get your steak done exactly as you want it. A little-known fact of this restaurant also is that the owner owns a fleet of fishing and crabbing boats, so your seafood meal was probably swimming that morning.
In town, you also find a fish store that usually doesn’t open till the afternoon because their fish is so fresh it came in on the charter boats that morning. And you really don’t know what they’re going to have until you get in there because as I said it’s that fresh.

About the owner: As very hands-on owners, Ray and Renée live in St. Petersburg Florida approximately three hours from the Boathouse retreat. I am a retired firefighter and Renée is a commercial realtor and we both are extremely hands-on with this property. As you will see this is a very, very special property and we truly wanted to be an amazing experience for you.

Why this property? We purchased this property as a legacy property from amazing owners that built it from scratch. When we first saw this property we knew we had to have it, it was perfect. Since then, we have made numerous upgrades to a perfect property.
You will understand this as you drive on the secluded road through the woods and come to the gates. You realize you’re in a very special place as we did when we first saw it and still do every time we come.
Across the river is a community called Steinhatchee landings, one of the original vacation spots for the area. Each home is individually built and has its own southern charm that can never be re-created in a cookie-cutter area.
The river itself offers an amazing abundance of sea life, from Manatee, to Tarpon, to trout, to redfish, to bass all swimming and rolling right in front of you.
Though the boathouse retreat is secluded with only one other house at the end of the road, you can sit and watch the action across the river or simply listen to nature as you are surrounded by such beauty that you won’t believe it.
