Daytona Beach, Florida travel advice

Daytona Beach is fun and fast. From one of the world’s most famous racetracks to one of its most famous beaches - Daytona offers something for all travelers (including spring breakers!) With low hurricane risk and averaging 80 degrees every single day, there’s no bad time to visit.

Arts and cultural attractions are woven into the fabric of the area - but the main draws are the sand and the speedway. You’ll find plenty of southern hospitality at this east coast destination.

Top activities and attractions

We’ll start with the titular beach, also known as the “world’s most popular beach”. It features 23 miles of coastline and soft packed sand. Splash in the waves, join a volleyball game, or just lay out and soak up the sun. There’s also spaces available to drive right up on the sand, which adds an interesting element to your day on the beach.

For the best views of Daytona, climb the 203 steps up to the top of Ponce de Leon Tower (one of Florida’s best preserved lighthouses) - which showcases breathtaking views of the city and surrounding waterfront.

Listen to free live tunes at the Daytona Beach Bandshell, which accommodates up to 5,000 people and overlooks the Atlantic Ocean. The scenic amphitheater is made of coquina shells.

The 500-acre Daytona International Speedway complex, known as “The World Center of Racing,” has a racing hall of fame and museum. Plus, visitors can push their limits at 200-miles-per-hour in the Richard Petty Driving Experience.

Best attractions for families

The Daytona Beach Pier & Boardwalk is a great place to visit in the evening as it cools down and gets dark. The boardwalk offers a wide variety of shops, rides and arcades for your kids to participate in. The roller coaster gives families a unique view of the city and a memory to share together.

Kids also love the Museum of Art and Sciences which recently added a Planetarium to its campus. There are hands-on exhibits, concerts, and rotating exhibits.

Annual events

There’s no wrong time to visit this bustling Florida hot spot, but timing your vacation with these fun annual events adds an extra element to your time here.

Bike Week: Ride in style during Bike Week when 500,000 motorcycle enthusiasts descend on Daytona for a really cool series of events. This year's 10-day event proves it's high octane with street festivals, concerts, motorcycle races at Daytona International Speedway, bike shows, rallies, manufacturer showcases and more.

Daytona 500: Held annually in February, the aptly named Daytona 500 is a 500-mile-long race in the NASCAR circuit. The Daytona 500 is regarded as the most important and prestigious race on the calendar, carrying by far the largest award money for the winner. Racing fans should make a visit to this incredible sporting event a must-do. You also have the option of racing the track yourself, or you can visit and take a tour of the speedway.

If motors aren’t your thing however, this area offers a number of annual events throughout the year that is guaranteed fun for the whole family!

The best restaurants and bars

You’ll find fresh seafood and plenty of oceanfront restaurants and bars here. The focus on quality doesn’t end with what comes out of the ocean, there are top-notch Italian, Mexican, and Asian cuisine choices here, too. If you’re in the mood for upscale and ready to wait a bit, Chucherias Hondurenas comes highly recommended as well as The Cellar.

If you’re looking for cheaper eats, visit Starlight Diner for the classic American diner experience, or My Pi pizza for the perfect slice.

Want to party the night away? Try the Banks and Blues Club which was built inside of an actual bank from the 1920s. Try the craft brews at Daytona Taproom or watch your favorite sports team at Oyster Pub.

If you are looking for something a bit more laid back, make your way over to Cinematique Theatre where you can catch movies under the stars.

Getting around

It’s really easy to get around using the VOTRAN trolley/bus service. Hop on and hop off at your leisure while stopping in to the major beach or sightseeing locales. You could also rent a car from the airport and drive around the area yourself, which many visitors choose to do.
