The large living room has French doors leading onto a screened-in porch, which overlooks the gardens and a brick walkway to a large shared hot tub. It has a large kitchen and bright dining room surrounded by windows, which have a view of the canal. The master suite has a beautiful bay window for gorgeous views of the gardens and a separate additional entrance for privacy that leads to the outdoor shower. Across the street is the canal and a dock for boating, kayaking, and fishing. It is only a short walk to the famous Siesta Key beach and village for all your shopping needs.

The unique benefit of staying at our Canal Place is that it is only a short walk to the beach. It has it's own private dock to access the Grand Canal with kayaks so you can explore the waterways or sit on the dock fishing. You can also rent a boat to dock here too. It's super close to the Siesta Village for great restaurants, market, post office, drug store, coffee shops, ice cream parlors, massage spas, and much more. We provide two bicycles to take you around town. It has a wonderful hot tub nested in tropical gardens for the perfect relaxation.

The kids love it for the kayaking and fishing right off your own dock. The Siesta Beach main pavilion has an amazing beach themed playground.
Siesta Key has been voted to have the best beach in the USA which you can walk to in five minutes from our Blue Lagoon bungalow! Fun shopping and restaurants are only a ten minute walk away in Siesta Village. Historic downtown Sarasota is teaming with the arts - opera, ballet, performing arts center, dinner theatre, galleries, Ringling museum, Selby botanical gardens - and a multitude of restaurants is only 15 minutes away. For bikers we have an 11 mile bike trail that is close by. Golf courses abound! Fishing charters, diving, snorkeling, kayaking, paddle boarding, and a lot more water sports are available right on Siesta Beach.
Attractions Within Walking Distance
The famous Siesta Beach has been voted to have the whitest sand in the USA! Three times in a row!!! Your beach access has no parking so its just you and the neighbors there. It makes is very easy and relaxing to watch the kids since they aren't getting lost in a sea of people.
We have everything we need right in the village: post office, family drug store, market, liquor store, apparel stores, souvenirs, many kinds of restaurants with outdoor dining, bike/moped/kayak/paddle board rentals, farmers market on Sundays, ice cream parlors, donut stop, coffee shops, skateboard shop, shoe shop, jewelers, and a gym. I think the list goes on!
Favorite Places To Eat
We have lots of favorites: The Sun Garden patio for breakfast, The Hub for lunch and Flavio's for dinner. But that's only ONE of our favorites. We have a whole list on our website: /favorites-1.html on our favorites page.
~There is a geocache hidden at the gazebo in the heart of the village. ~The fish that jump in the canals are Mullet. ~There are no alligators in the canals. They are only fresh water and ours is salt water. ~There is kayaking in mangrove tunnels on Lido Key (favorite thing to do!) ~The white beach sand never gets hot! It is made of 90% quarts and cannot retain the heat.~ The manatees love to come into the canals when its cold. Often we can see dolphins sanding right on the beach. ~You've got to watch for the "green flash" as the sun hits the horizon. I've only seen it once! ~There are great Happy Hour specials at The Cottage restaurant in the village. ~You can rent a boat and explore the canals and deserted islands in the intercostal and water ski around skiers island ~ There is a yoga class on the beach.

Alison and Richard Light
Year Purchased: 2000
About the owner: We are Ali, Rich and Chloe Jane Light. We moved to Siesta Key in 1997 and have never looked back. We absolutely love living here and sharing our paradise with our guests. We have been renting our six cosy bungalows since 1998. Ali is an artist and has drawn inspiration for colors and design of our bungalows from our travels to Hawaii, Ireland, and the British Virgin Islands. Rich was a custom design home builder and landlord for many years in the Philadelphia region, so together we have found the perfect match for having beach rentals.
Why this property? When we moved to Siesta Key in 1997 we knew that we wanted to be able to share this gorgeous area with others and having rentals seemed to be the perfect way.We started buying and restoring our Bungalows in 2000.

Guestbook comments from the owner:
Hi Ali and Rich! As usual, we had a great time in Florida thanks in a major part to you. You were always responsive and helpful any time we had a problem and your maps and brochure are always helpful. We found the house open, clean and ready for us when we arrived. You keep the place in great shape and we enjoy spending a cocktail hour with you and your little girl. Looking forward to seeing all of you next winter! Kris and Larry
Large, clean home with very nice and private yard. Close to the village and beach. Great place I would recommend to friends.
Frequently Asked Questions
How far are you to Siesta beach and Siesta Village?
We are a just around the corner to the village and a short walk to the beach. Your closest access is #7.
Can you fish off of the dock and are there alligators?
Yes, fishing off the dock is really fun, and alligators are extremely rare because they are found in fresh water and the canal water is salt water.
Where does the canal go to?
The canal is part of the Grand Canal and will lead you to the intercoastal waterway where you can get to the Gulf of Mexico.
Fabulous location in a comfy pet friendly cottage
We (2 couples) have stayed at Canal Place in Siesta Key for 5 years. Our hosts, Rich and Ali Light, are gracious hosts and very responsive. Canal Place is in an excellent location, about 10min to the village and 15 min to the beach. It is a spacious, rustic cottage with a lovely lanai and backyard where we spent most of our time. The kitchen is a good size and has a dishwasher. The cottage has simple decorations and was comfortable for 2 couples (1 larger bedroom, 1 small and 2 small bathrooms). It is located in a quiet neighbourhood away from the parties in the village. There is a small grocery store in the village that is very convenient. Rich was very obliging in allowing us to bring our dogs. Of course, we ensured that they were quiet and friendly and we are responsible owners. We enjoyed use of a kayak for the canals and beach chairs (bring your own umbrella). The facilities outdoors, like the washing machine, chairs, bicycles are shared with the cottage in the back. Actually we made friends with some of those tenants. We really enjoyed our time spent at Canal Place and the Siesta Key area. Rich was great at providing many good suggestions about what to do and where to go in the area. He was also very responsive in making sure that everything at the cottage was working properly!

Gloria, It was our pleasure to have you stay at Canal Place for those five years. Thank you for your lovely review. We really appreciate the time you spent to write it.
A Relaxing Tropical Getaway
We are currently enjoying the 3rd month of our 8+ month stay at Canal Place and couldn't be happier! This lovely cottage is warm and inviting, and is perfect for a long or short stay. There are so many wonderful things about it, but the very best feature is the amazing location. Being just a 5 minute (or less) walk or an even shorter bike ride from Siesta Key Village has been absolutely fantastic. There are so many charming restaurants and shops that we can easily go to within minutes. Also, the beach is just a short walk or bike ride away as well. We've spent many evenings watching sunset on the beach, having a evening beach picnic, or riding bikes on the beach. Another convenience is that the cottage is located right across from the canal, with its own dock and kayaks. We've been out several times and seen dolphins and manatees on every trip. We even saw a manatee right from the dock. We rented paddleboards from a local rental shop and they delivered/picked up the boards right at the dock, which was so easy - if you prefer SUPs to kayaks.Besides the location, the property itself is really adorable and feels much larger than it actually is. The interior is brightly painted, with a Caribbean/Key West vibe and the owners have taken care to keep the cottage true to the original Old Florida style. The outdoor space is beautiful and includes a screened in lanai, which we have definitely enjoyed as a space to relax and to have dinner. The backyard is a charming little garden, with a brick paver walkway leading to the outdoor hot tub. All around the yard you'll see bougainvillea and a wealth of natural foliage. Just lovely! If you want a true Old Florida, tropical island experience, and not just a place to stay, this is most certainly the spot for you! Forgo the stuffy condo and enjoy this little cottage and you'll be glad you did. If we don't decide to move here permantly sooner than we think...we'll be back!! The owners, Rich and Ali Light, have been lovely...warm, friendly, caring and helpful. You won't have to worry about having issues that won't be taken care of, or owners who are nowhere to be found, because they live just across the canal and are happy to help you with anything you need. They are easy to communicate with and a pleasure to work with!We can't wait to enjoy the next few months here!
