About the owner: Jack Anderson, originally from Tacoma, Washington, and Liliane arrived in Key West in 1986, having recently completed an adventure on the family home – a 42 foot sailboat.
Four years prior, they had sold their thriving leather crafts business in the French Alps, said goodbye to friends and family, and boarded their steel hulled ketch, Nividic, with their 5 year old daughter and 2 year old son in tow. Setting sail for the Canary Islands, and then crossing the Atlantic, the family spent the next four and half years sailing in the Caribbean, eventually arriving, with $23 left, at Land’s End Marina, behind the Half Shell Raw Bar at the Key West Bight.
Always the sailor and leather craftsman, Jack started making leather jewelry and selling at the nightly sunset celebration on Mallory Square. Soon, Local Color opened next door to the historic Turtle Kraals, at the original location of Jimmy Buffet’s Margaritaville store.
As the businesses grew, Jack and Liliane, with children still in tow, would travel the world, buying jewelry, clothing, and accessories in far flung locales – Bali, Mexico City, the highlands of Guatemala, Ibiza, Vilnius, Paris, India, the Dominican Republic…
Always evolving, the Andersons designed their own clothing lines for the tropics and Key West jewelry collections.
Today, you can see all of these influences when you shop at Local Color and Commotion, and there’s always something new! And it is still very much a family affair.
In 2014, the Andersons bought 814 Carey as their retirement house, but they're not quite ready to settle down, so this property will be selectively available for another few years!

Frequently Asked Questions
What's your Hurricane Policy?
HURRICANE POLICY AND TRIP INSURANCE
Hurricane refunds or rescheduling are not offered. Guests are advised to purchase trip cancellation and interruption insurance to protect their vacation rental investment from costs due to an impending storm, hurricane warning, or mandatory evacuation. This insurance offers a comprehensive cancellation and interruptions policy, which protects your rental property investment in the event of a cancellation due to a sudden emergency before or during your trip.
Trip Insurance in Case of a Tropical Storm or Hurricane
If traveling to Key West during Hurricane Season (June 1 – November 30), we strongly advise you to purchase Trip Cancellation and Interruption Insurance to protect your vacation rental investment in the unexpected event of an impending storm.
Below are a few popular options:
Travel Guard
Red Sky (Trip Preserver)
Travel insurance is reasonably priced (typically running about 7.5% of total trip cost), and with it you can confidently plan your Key West vacation, assured that you will receive hurricane related compensation in the event of a storm.
We advise you to choose the best policy to meet your needs and purchase travel insurance early. There are a few general rules, to be aware of: Buy insurance within 15 days of paying for the rental or making a trip deposit. Keep in mind that it’s too late if insurance is purchased on or after the day a storm is named. At that point you won’t be eligible for any hurricane-related compensation, including a refund for a canceled flight or payment for the vacation rental.
What Happens if a Hurricane Interrupts Your Trip to Key West?
You’ve booked your flights, rented your vacation home, purchased trip cancellation and interruption insurance, and now you’re prepared just in case. But what if a storm does point our way? What happens if you’re on your way to Key West or already checked into your vacation rental when a storm is named?
First, stay calm, it’s easy to stay updated during hurricane season on-line and on TV. The National Hurricane Center / NOAA in Miami, Florida provides constant tropical outlooks in the Atlantic, along with everything we need to know for tracking storm formations. If they anticipate there will be sustained winds of 74 mph or higher within 48 hours, a ‘hurricane watch’ is issued, and this lets everyone know to be ‘on guard,’ that weather conditions are favorable for severe weather and to prepare for action. When a ‘hurricane watch’ status is declared, our guests are required to pack up and leave the vacation rental and evacuate Key West, to assure they are safe from harm and any discomfort that a storm may bring.
In the event of an impending storm, we must do our best to protect all our guests and our properties, and follow the official orders for evacuation. At this point our staff becomes busy preparing homes for a storm by securing storm shutters, storing outdoor furniture, gathering our own emergency kits, and evacuating ourselves and our families.
After a Tropical Storm or Hurricane Passes
If a named storm quickly passes or misses Key West completely, you may be able to return to Key West to finish your vacation stay. If you resume occupancy of the reserved property you hereby acknowledge that the property will be “as is” and that all amenities (pool, Jacuzzi, outdoor areas, BBQ, etc) may not be available or in clean usable condition for some time after the storm has passed.
Regardless of what happens you can rest assured that your trip interruption and cancellation insurance will compensate you for vacation days lost.
The last major hurricanes to hit Key West were Irma in 2017, and before that, Wilma in 2005. Even with the severity of those storms, Key West managed to get things cleaned up and back in action in a very short order. Key West is a small very diverse community with a strong sense of connectedness among our island residents. Our motto is “One Human Family,” and when disaster does strike it is amazing how quickly residents pitch in to help each other get everything back on track, and our island beautified for all to enjoy. But, regardless of our hometown compassion, for those of us who have been through hurricanes, we know how big the toll can be in terms of stress as well as dollars. We invite our guests to come to Key West in the summertime - to expect the best, but be prepared for the worst, just in case there is a storm.

A little slice of heaven on earth
The location is perfect - about 3 blocks from Duval, and 3 blocks from Truman, and a short bike ride to Ft. Zachary beach. We did not have a car, and did two Uber runs for groceries at Publix, then used the local Fausto's for everything else. We did not need a car. We used bikes or walked everywhere. We had our tea at the pool every day, and the yard is lovely, The pool house was the perfect sleeping location for our raging night owl who came for Christmas week - no one got woken up when he came in late!. The kitchen had everything we needed - I roasted a prime rib, and some salmon for Christmas dinner and had all the equipment we needed. The first floor master was very comfortable and quiet, and we liked the shower a lot. The desk and printer was handy ( I worked remotely most of the month ) . The living area was comfortable for TV watching on rainy days (we had a few of those). Pool was great, we had friends in town and while it looks small, 8 of us were comfortable lounging and floating in the water. Outdoor shower was used a lot, and the washer and dryer were very nice. As an FYI, the upstairs bathroom is really tight for a bigger person, but manageable. The property manager (Kevin) is great, and super attentive and responsive. We hope to make the trip for two months next year, it was the perfect rental for us.

Perfect place!
This house is in the perfect location that is quiet and private. It’s literally in the center of old town and just a short walk to everything. It is very comfortable and has a great layout. The cabana is in a building on its own right next to the main house. In the main house, the master is on one side and the other bed/bath is on the opposite side with the living space and kitchen in-between. There is a front porch with rocking chairs and the back pool area is a great space to cool down and relax. It has a comfortable patio area and a screened in Florida room that is the perfect place to lounge with family and friends. We’ve stayed in many places in key west and this place is by far the best.

Perfect House in Key West
Three friends have stayed here for three winters from January to March and love it -- we treat it like our own homes. It is spread out, great sunporch, pool, and hidden in the middle of Old Town. A favorite of all the houses I have rented for the past 20 years.

Second Year—Love It!
Great home! The Andersons are great hosts. Easy/responsive communications. Had minor maintenance issue and it was fixed quickly. Perfect quiet location and the pool is a great luxury. 5 minute bike ride to Duval and surrounds. We’ll definitely return.

incredible and relaxing
If you are looking for a great place that is close enough to everything but still has that at home quite during the night this is the place. The property is wonderful. There is an enclosed back porch adding to the living space. The perfect place to relax and unwind. The pool and hot tub are the best and offer an additional place to cool off with friends and have a few drinks. You can walk almost anywhere you would want to go but we always recommend bikes or scooters. They make getting around the island easier no matter where you stay. Lastly and most important to me was the owners. They are wonderful to deal with and so kind. They bend over backwards to make your stay pleasant. The only negative thing I can say is that the property is not ours. But for several years now it has been our temporary home away from home. If you choose to stay here you cannot go wrong
