During Sea Turtle Nesting Season, May 1st - October 31st, female loggerhead sea turtles crawl out of the Gulf of America and nest on Marco Island's beach(s).
Crawling onto the beach at night, female loggerheads make their nests and lay, and cover up, their eggs. They then instinctually return to the Gulf waters following the naturally bright horizon of the Gulf. Artificial lights on the upland and shoreline disorient the turtles and deter them from nesting or returning to the ocean.
Likewise, the hatchlings instinctually head to the Gulf waters following the naturally bright horizon of the Gulf. They too are disoriented by the artificial lights. If they are disoriented, they often die from dehydration and are easily preyed upon by fire ants, ghost crabs, and birds.

Please keep in mind that "first occurrence” fines can be $500 and increase to $5,000, depending on the situation and each day is considered a separate occurrence.
