We love to walk to Bellair Beach across the causeway, just 3 mile walk round trip. The walk over the bridge allows you to see the most beautiful views of the intracoastal, lovely mansions in Bellair, and to breathe the clean warm air, sea breezes and get that heart pumping!
There are so many good restaurants in this area, we will highlight just a few of our favorites, primarily listing those that are closest to Sunlight Cottage.
Coffee/Breakfast
Belleair Coffee Company and Roasters -Basically up on the corner, 100 Indian Rocks Rd N, Belleair Bluffs, - walking distance and has an outdoor café. Great coffee and quiche!
Belleair Market and Belleair Café - Experience this charming duo, we like shopping at the Market and the deli is outstanding. The Café, behind the market is one of our favorite breakfast location. 2601 Jewel Road Belleair Bluffs
Maggie Mae’s on the Bluffs – Large breakfast menu, funky lunch selections, cool air conditioning. Delicious coffee. 2961 West Bay Drive
Sunshine Joe’s Coffee Shop - I love local coffee shops, this one has a real local feel, right next to an eclectic resale shop – a perfect get lost and get away moment. 13128 Indian Rocks Rd.
Grove Surf Café/Coffee Indian Rocks Beach 1309 Gulf Blvd Indian Rocks Beach - a favorite place for smoothies and a good cool place for a coffee drink or a bite to eat before or after the beach.
Lunch or Dinner
E & E Stakeout Grill – Excellent steaks, and seafood. Warm ambiance, nice place for special dinner. 100 Indian Rocks Rd N, Belleair Bluffs, FL 33770
Sekushi at the Plaza - Sushi, tempura, and great happy hour pricing from 11am to 7pm and get $3-$5-$7 sushi items! Again, just up at the corner enjoy outdoor streetside seating, or indoor seating and bar. 100 Indian Rocks Rd N, Belleair
Seaweed - Steaks, Sushi and Seafood, and excellent local Stone Crab in season, good seafood, and nice casual atmosphere., decent pricing. 2819 W Bay Dr, Belleair Bluffs
Cold Stone Creamery Nice staff and we love creating our own ice cream then taking the short drive over to the Belleair Park/Community Center Gazebo to enjoy. 2923 W Bay Dr.
Havana Harry’s - We’ll frequently order take out and come home with our favorite Cuban fare. The Cuban sandwiches are excellent. Not much atmosphere but easy take out and reasonable pricing. 14219 Walsingham Rd, Largo
Cristino’s Coal Oven Pizza - Our pick out of all the pizza places. It can get crowded during season, but worth the wait. Reasonable Italian menu, but get the pizza. Save room for the homemade gelato. 1101 S Ft Harrison Ave, Clearwater, FL 33756
Amici Italian Eatery - Really good food at a reasonable price and very popular, so make a reservation. 901 W Bay Dr A1, Largo
Coletta’s Italian Deli - Great deli and store, especially good Italian sausage and cookies, really nice staff. - 2575 E Bay Dr, Largo, FL 33771
We include lots of inside scoop on parking at the beach, local information such as the following in a directory that is located inside our home.
Intercoastal Beach – Before crossing over the Belleair Bridge, exit right as if going to the boat launching area. You can walk to it from the house, or park and follow the path under bridge to the sandy shoreline, it’s nice and shallow and kid friendly.
Belleair Beach - You can walk to Belleair Beach by going west on West Bay Drive across the Belleair Bridge – there is a nice sidewalk and very scenic overlook as you cross over the intercoastal waterway. At the base of the ocean side of the bridge on the left is a small park with a playground. The rest of Belleair Beach is private, as the community does not allow public access, sorry.
Indian Rocks Beach – The closest beach with public access and our favorite, is this beautiful beach area. Cross the West Bay Bridge and turn left on Gulf Blvd. at the light. Some parking is available at Beach access points, however it does fill up quickly. Best bet for parking is the Indian Rocks Beach Nature Preserve (a nice boardwalk worth a few extra minutes) at 903 Gulf Blvd. You must cross the street, and then you can enter the beach at 10th Ave Beach access. You can park on residential streets but obey any no parking areas.
John W. Bonner Nature Park – At the traffic light on the corner, go south on Indian Rocks Road 2 miles on the right, to find this gem boasting a variety of boardwalks, trails and picnic areas. Beautiful views of the intercoastal waterway from the dock.
Pinellas Trail – The Pinellas Trail is a wonderful paved bicycle or walking trail that runs 45 miles from St Petersburg to Tarpon Springs. You can access the trail on West Bay Drive, but an easier riding route that avoids the busy highway is to go east one block on West Bay Drive, turn right at the light on 20th St NW, then left onto 8th Ave NW and in 1/2 mile, you’ll come to the trail. Its awesome if you’ve brought bikes. But bike rental is another option in Dunedin at Kafe Racer and Coffee Shop on Douglas Ave. in Dunedin. Then, ride north on the trail from this bikeshop for the best areas.
Taylor Park – One of our favorites, at 1100 8th Ave. SW. Its a beautiful 1.4 mile walk around this serene lake with waterbirds and occasionally spot an alligator or two floating on the lake, so no swimming here. Picnic tables, and an excellent playground accessible on the east side of the lake, very close to the Pinellas Bike Trail parking lot. There is also a disc golf course – lots of fun. Rent disc golf equipment at Salt Crew Disc Golf Pro shop a couple blocks away at 12th Ave SW Largo, Florida – (closed on Monday and Tuesdays)
Clearwater Beach - World famous and worth a visit, but it’s always crowded. We somewhat prefer the north side of Clearwater Beach as it’s a little quieter than the main area and parking is usually more available. Plan an entire day here, with shopping, dining, bar hopping after a day in the sun. There are also boat charters of all kinds docked in this beach area.
Honeymoon Island – If you want a more secluded, non-developed beach, Honeymoon Island is it. This is a state park and there are no stores. Lots of Parking and very nice beach but requires an $8 per vehicle entry fee - well worth it. Bring a cooler, there is a small gift shop, a snack bar, restroom and shower facilities. The traffic during season is pretty busy so plan ahead and go early. This is a gorgeous beach.
St Petersburg Beach – Another world class beach area you should check out. We were married years ago at the Don Cesar Hotel, a breathtaking giant pink, art deco hotel at the pinnacle of this gorgeous beach. Try to get inside and take a look around this awesome historic landmark hotel. Take Gulf Blvd south along the beach about 20 miles, the entire length of Pinellas County to this particular beach area. Since you’re down this far south, you should also check out Pass-a Grill Beach – it has some funky bars, and restaurants with a cool vibe.
Downtown St Petersburg - The Pier, Bayfront Park and the Vinoy Hotel are all good reasons to visit this area located on the east side of Pinellas County on Tampa Bay. You can spend an entire day here and probably should as the drive can be an hour there and back… very cool and a bit more upscale and trendy than the rest of the county. Definitely worth a look!
Central Avenue St Petersburg – Since you’re in this downtown area of St Petersburg, check out famous Central Ave, a fun visit in itself. This area of the downtown has about 40 blocks full of shops, galleries and restaurants. Drive up and down Central Ave first to decide where you want to get out and start walking. I recommend parking around 20th at a public parking lot or on any side street parking. For authentic Cuban food, we love the Bodega Cafe 1180 Central Ave.
Dunedin - Becoming world renowned is the charming town of Dunedin. A quaint artist, dining and shopping area north of Clearwater about 8 miles. Its fun walking around and getting drinks, ice cream or dinner among dozens of cool fancy unique places. Rent a golf cart for a couple hours too. Pioneer Park hosts a farmers market type event every Friday and Saturday from 9am – 2 pm. July – October its only open on Saturday. Also check out Dunedin History Museum. The Pinellas Bike Trail cruises right through the Dunedin downtown area BTW. During season, the Toronto Blue Jays preseason baseball games are at a stadium in Dunedin. Get tix online, cheap!
Tampa - We lived in Tampa for several years and can recommend the Sea Aquarium on Harbor Island. Spend some more time on Harbor Island as its one of downtown Tampa’s famous developments with plenty of shops, dining, clubbing etc. Hyde Park and Ybor City are also famous trendy destinations definitely worth a look. Go late afternoon, walk around, have dinner then hit the nightlife in all these areas. Take an Uber if you want to party late!
