These are some of our favorite local tips that many visitors don't discover until they've spent time in the area:
Skip the crowded beaches and head to Boca Grande early in the morning. The beaches are beautiful, parking is easier, and you'll often find the best shelling before most visitors arrive.
Watch for dolphins in Charlotte Harbor. If you're boating or dining along the harbor, keep an eye on the water—dolphin sightings are surprisingly common.
Catch a sunset at Boca Grande or Stump Pass. Some of the most spectacular sunsets on Florida's Gulf Coast can be found just a short drive away.
Visit Bean Depot when there's live music. This waterfront restaurant is located in a historic former mail depot and offers a great local atmosphere, especially on evenings when musicians are performing.
Take a golf cart tour around Boca Grande. It's one of the best ways to explore the island's beaches, shops, and historic neighborhoods.
Fish from nearly anywhere. The canals, Charlotte Harbor, and nearby Gulf waters are known for snook, redfish, tarpon, and trout. Even if you're not an avid angler, it's fun to watch locals bring in their catch.
Explore Fishermen's Village in Punta Gorda. It's one of our favorite places for waterfront dining, shopping, ice cream, and evening strolls.
Visit Englewood Beach for a more relaxed atmosphere. Many guests find it less crowded than some of the larger Florida beaches while still offering beautiful Gulf views.
Take the scenic drive along Gasparilla Road. It's one of the prettiest drives in the area and leads to several beaches, parks, and waterfront restaurants.
Enjoy the wildlife in South Gulf Cove. Keep your eyes open for burrowing owls, osprey, herons, egrets, turtles, and even the occasional manatee or dolphin in nearby waterways.
