What actually makes a great sunset?

A good sunset is the centerpiece of a beachfront vacation rental, but the best ones aren't necessarily on the coasts. A memorable sunset needs something in the sky to catch the light, clean air to keep the color rich, and an open view to the west. Water in the foreground helps too. We measured each of these ingredients across the continental United States, more than 8 million square kilometers of it, on a grid of about 13,000 cells.

One pattern jumps out right away. The best skies are not on the famous coasts. They are inland, over the high desert lakes and reservoirs of the Mountain West, where the air is clean and dry and there is open water to the west to catch the color. The scores run close together up here, so each spot's line calls out what sets it apart.

So what about California?

If you pictured Malibu or Big Sur, you're not wrong that they're beautiful. But the data is clear: The famous coasts are more about the setting than the sky.

The Pacific coast has wonderfully clean air, and that helps. The problem is the clouds. The coast is often either socked in with low fog or perfectly clear, and neither makes a vivid sunset. You need a little high cloud to catch the last light. California's skies are often too plain, so its beloved beaches land in the middle of the pack, not the top. Its best entry is the Salton Sea, and even that sits just outside the national top 100.

Here is where a few famous names actually landed, scored the same way as everywhere else.

How we did it

The method, in plain terms

We wanted a ranking that holds up, so we built it from real weather and satellite data rather than opinion or photo counts.

We scored the whole country.

We divided the continental U.S. into a grid of roughly 13,000 cells, each about 25 kilometers across, and scored every one. Nothing was hand-picked, so the winners were discovered, not chosen.

We studied five years of evenings.

For every cell, we looked at the hours around sunset on every day from 2020 through 2024, using European (ERA5) weather reanalysis for cloud and humidity and NASA (MERRA-2) data for smoke and dust.

We measured the sky, the air, the view, and the odds.

We used six factors in all: high cloud, low cloud, dry air, clean air, an open western view with water, and how reliably good evenings show up. Cloud quality matters most, so it carries the most weight.

Then we checked the horizon.

For the top places we confirmed you can actually see the western horizon, using terrain data, and set aside the few that sit behind a ridge or canyon wall.

A note on honesty: Each result is really a region about 25 km wide, not a single address, and we score the probability of a vivid sunset, not the one perfect evening. A great sunset can happen anywhere. This is about where the odds are best.
