About the Property

  • Sleeps: 5
  • Bedrooms: 2
  • Bathrooms: 1
  • Property Type: House
  • Minimum Stay: 1 night
  • Living Area: 950 sq. ft.

Our house is located right on Lake Rousseau. This is a reservoir lake made in the early 1900s. The lake is fed partly by the 141 mile Withlacoochee River and the crystal clear, cool Rainbow River.
{You can get another look at the house at Evolve. The listing number is 430293. The house is also listed at VRBO. The listing number is 7596321.}
The house is about 950 square feet under air but it does have a 27 by 15 covered carport and a garage area that makes the under roof square footage about 2200. The yard is 300 feet from the road to the lake and about 90 feet wide. You can easily maneuver a truck and boat trailer.
Inside, the house has two bedrooms and one bath. One bed is a full and the other a queen. The couch opens to a queen sleeper and a small child (my 9 year old grandson did) can sleep on the well padded patio chaise on the back porch. We have had 9 family members stay the night but it was tight. The house is comfortable for 5 and I would like to keep it no more than 6.
As you can see in the pictures, the living room and kitchen are combined. This house is well stocked with two hot plates, microwave, toaster oven, bake and broiler oven, a Set It and Forget It rotisserie, blenders, crock pot, pots and pans, two coffee makers (large and 2 cup) and plenty of silverware and glassware.
Climate is controlled by Mitsubishi mini split systems. They are so efficient and quiet. Each room has the capability for its own temperature. You don't get that with central air.
TV viewing is provided by an LG 43 inch HD TV. Xfinity cable and wifi keep you connected and you are welcome to search Netflix as a guest user.
You will find games and manuals for appliances in the TV cabinet. Also in there, you will find an assortment of DVDs.
Folks that stay 5 days or longer get washroom privileges. There is a full size upright freezer and a washer and dryer in the washroom. If you stay less than 5 days and you insist upon having the ability to wash clothes, I would add another fee of $15.
On the carport you will find charcoal and gas grills. There is a gas tank but I don't keep it full. The gas was left on too many times and it's not cheap to keep fueling tanks. However, guests usually leave their left over charcoal and lighter fluid and those items are less expensive and make food taste better anyway.
Lakeside is the best side of the property. The shoreline is shaded by oak and cypress trees. That shade is awesome in the summertime. The dock is 16 feet by 12 feet. and has a table with 4 chairs. There is a table umbrella (9 feet diameter) on the back porch. Use it on the dock table but lower it when you are done. One good wind will pick it up and relocate it in the lake. When it gets dark, you can light up the water and trees at the dock. The light switch is marked in the house for dock lights. Enjoy a beer and conversation. Sometimes it's buggy with a few mosquitoes, but never do we get no-see-ums. That's really great, too! Get near the salt coast and those biting gnats can drive you inside.
Usually there is fish food in a bucket on the dock. I feed the fish a handful twice a day. You can torture them by feeding one pellet at a time. They act like piranhas when you do that. If you enjoy feeding the fish and run out of food, you can't get more at a feed supply store. I get mine at Rural King in Crystal River.
Pan fishing is great and bass fishing is...well...bass fishing. Take one of the kayaks or canoes and get out farther in the lake if they aren't biting around the dock.
If you enjoy paddling you won't get bored. My neighbor paddles from KP Hole in Dunnellon, down the Rainbow River into the Withlacoochee River and back to the house. That's probably 15 miles. From the dock you can navigate the entire lake and rivers systems by any vessel.
Go exploring. If you don't have a boat you can use our canoes and kayaks. In fact, if you have a vehicle that you can strap them down to, take them into Dunnellon and paddle the Rainbow or go into Crystal River and try the Gulf or the fresh water springs there. Take your life jacket and whistle because it's the law. $90 fine.

Unique Benefits

If you google map the area, and if you are into exploring lakes, rivers, and springs, you will see that the house is situated very well. To sweeten the deal, we have 2 kayaks and 2 canoes that you can haul around or just to use at the lake.
The house is just plain peaceful to come home to after a busy day exploring. We have guests that just stay at the house all day and relax. The only time they leave is to go get dinner. And we only have a 2 day minimum.

Why Kids Love It

Kids love water. Scalloping is an easy and entertaining way to snorkel the Gulf flats. Find the other boats and you find scallops. Rinse off later in the fresh water. There are fresh water springs in Dunnellon and Crystal River. Check out Rainbow Springs State Park, KP Hole for tubing, Hunter Springs, and the springs in Homosassa and Chassahowitzka.
I know that they like to be in the water but don't let them swim in Lake Rousseau because of the alligators. On the dock you can let the kids feed the fish and catch some but don't let them feed the gators. That's just asking for trouble.
At night the kids can watch their Netflix shows or play some of the games we have. The yard is plenty big enough to run around on and the neighborhood is super safe. We wear our grandboys out during the day and by 9:00 at night they are asleep.

Area Information

As stated previously, this is a reservoir lake made in the early 1900s. The lake is fed partly by the 141 mile Withlacoochee River. The river winds, twists, and flows through 12 miles of the lake before emptying in the Gulf of Mexico near Yankeetown. On the west end of the lake is the Inglis Dam. The dam does block navigation to the Gulf but there is a steep boat ramp there that takes you to the Florida Barge canal and then out to the Gulf. There is also a boat ramp at the Hwy 98 bridge where the highway crosses over the barge canal. From there, it's a short few miles at 25 mph to the Gulf. Now, also feeding the lake is the Rainbow River. The Rainbow and Withlacoochee rivers intersect in the city of Dunnellon and continue west through Lake Rousseau. The Rainbow River is a first magnitude spring and a series of smaller springs that gently winds nearly 6 miles before meeting with the Withlacoochee River and then forming Lake Rousseau. The lake and river systems are very unique, quiet, and mostly untamed. Swimming in the Rainbow River system is safe by my standards, in fact we swim regularly there and tubers by the hundreds are there every day during the hot months, but swimming in the Withlacoochee or Rousseau would be to do so at great risk. You might become that dainty morsel an alligator has been waiting ever so patiently for. However, plenty of people do swim in both and even scuba for fossils in the river/lake system. I do not and do not intend to. Thanks to the internet there are loads of sites attesting to all the things to do and see in the area.

Favorite Places To Eat

In the town of Dunnellon, I like the Citrus Grill for all three meals, Carmela's has a good Italian menu, the Purple Sage is great for breakfast and lunch, The Front Porch is just good at everything and very popular, and of course all the franchise burger joints are there, too. The historic area at Williams and Pennsylvania streets has the more original and hip places to check out and some interesting stores to shop in. In fact, 6 Crazy Chics is where I buy artwork for the lakehouse and my home down south.
Crystal River has more upscale dining like Vintage on Fifth, Seafood Seller (my wife's favorite), Charlie's Seafood and everything in between like the Crab Plant, Cody's, and my favorite and super cheap priced...Granny's! The lines at Granny's can be long but the food is good and the prices are family friendly. It's only a breakfast and lunch spot. I fish the Gulf and Granny's is on the way and open at 5:30 AM.
About a 5 minute drive from the house is a local bar called the Loft Bar and Grill. We really enjoy it and it can get very busy. The food is good and the happy hour is hard to pass up.
Use the internet and explore the dining spots. Let me know if you discover a really interesting menu that's really tasty, too.

Inside Scoop

Don't pay to launch a boat because there are to many good free ramps.
If you scallop, check the deeper spots at low tide and the shallow spots at high tide. Drift the flats and fish the keys points and cuts.
Lake Rousseau is marked with red and green markers. Follow the numbers on the markers in order and stay between them. The lake is like a land mine of old stumps. Some are just above the surface and some just below. If you venture out of the channel in your boat, do so at idle speed. Since the river twists, I again suggest you follow the markers in consecutive order to stay in the channel, especially in turns and twists that may confuse you and then......bam! No worries because it's easy to figure out if you are careful.

Owner Info

Will Steinbeck

Year Purchased: 2005

About the owner: We are happy, faithful, retired teachers. Are son and daughter left the nest long ago and have given us 5 grandboys to pick on us.
Like most people, we enjoy dinners out and hanging out. For hobbies, if it has something to do with water I am sure we will love it. We both like to read but I like to tinker around too, and my wife likes to bake. I'm not much on sweets so she gives it away to our tenants back home. I think that's why our tenants don't leave.

Why this property? This lake property was in need of love and respect. As school teachers, we had summers off and we aren't afraid of work and we have an aptitude to figure things out so we started to clean, repair, replace, paint, plant, etc. Now we have a comfortable and uniquely styled home. Our signature is everywhere. And now that we are retired and have traveling plans of our own, we decided to rent it out instead of let it just sit there. Homes are like cars. If you don't use them they won't be able to be used when you need them.
And seriously, this lake is just relaxing to look at. The birding activity is spectacular, too. We have snake birds, green, blue and white herons, cormorants, eagles (in season), osprey, whistling ducks, coots (in season), moorhens, red birds, titmouse, hummingbirds.......and then the gators, foxes, turtles, otters, racoons.......a lot of wildlife thanks to the lake.

Didnt go but the renter is amazing!

The owner called us directly and was completely honest to us with conditions of the area! He was willing to work with us but didnt think it would fit what we were looking to do!! We have boats and bass fish but the lake was choked up with hydrilla!! I know if we went we would have been taken care of as the owner was more than helpful!!

Owner response

Thank you, Jennifer. You didn't get to stay but maybe next time during the cooler months when the fishing is even better and the aquatic plants are taking a winter rest. And about be helpful, it's certainly better to be honest while being helpful. I just want people to have a good time and when they do they come back for more good times. Have a quality day Jennifer Will

Lovely quiet and quaint

We arrived to wonderful weather and a lovely, clean lake house. Beautiful lake front with great views of water and wildlife. Cozy and not too far from town and shopping etc. We found some good places for a drink and good food. Thanks to the generous and friendly owners.
