Free and Inexpensive Things to Do in Our Area
Theme Park vacations are SO expensive, and sometimes it is fun to do things that give you a break from the crowds or give your budget a break. Here are some things we have enjoyed doing in the area for little to no cost.
1) Celebration, Florida– This little town, originally developed by the Walt Disney Company, is about 8 miles away. Market Street is at the heart of Celebration. There are frequent community events at the Celebration Lakeside Park. It’s a pleasant place for a stroll around the lake and adjoining trails. We’ve seen some interesting Florida birds and other wildlife.
2) Blue Springs State Park – About 60 miles away, we thought a visit to this park was well worth the drive. From Mid-November to March manatee make this beautiful blue spring their home. You can learn more about it on the website.
3) Disney Springs – Parking is free at Disney Springs, which is Disney World’s retail, dining, and entertainment center. You can often catch free live performances and other entertainment in the evenings.
4) Disney Boardwalk Area – Here you can check out several Disney resorts and take the Disney Skyliner aerial gondolas for a fun experience. You can get on and off of the Skyliner to explore the fun theming at multiple resorts such as Art of Animation and Pop Century. Due to the pandemic, you may need to mobile order from the Boardwalk Bakery using the My Disney Experience app to get on Disney property or take a bus from Disney Springs.
5) Lake Louisa State Park is about 13 miles away at 7305 US-27, Clermont, FL 34714, if you just want some time out in nature for a hike or a stroll by the lake.
6) Universal City Walk – Parking at Universal’s City Walk is free after 6 p.m. City Walk is always bustling and a great place to walk around if you enjoy people-watching. The AMC theater there offers some $5 ticket deals during the week and they will reimburse for parking when you see a movie there during the day.
7) Animal Kingdom Lodge – If you can’t make it to Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park, stopping by to see the animals that roam the savannas at the Animal Kingdom Lodge (and admire the Lodge itself) can be a lot of fun. Due to the pandemic, you may need to mobile order from a quick service restaurant to get on property or you can take a bus from Disney Springs.
8) Winter Park, Florida – About 30 miles away, we enjoyed our visit to this charming little town. The staff at the Winter Park Welcome Center helped us identify some fun things to see and do. You might enjoy the scenic boat tour, the parks and gardens, a stroll through the Rollins College campus, or a visit to the downtown shops and restaurants.
9) Universal Resorts – Sidewalks connect Universal City Walk to the Universal resorts. We have enjoyed walking along the river there and checking out the themes of each resort. You can hop on a Universal Water Taxi if you get tired of walking.
10) Port Orleans Resort (Riverside Hotel and French Quarter Hotel) – Disney has a fleet of boats and we enjoyed parking for free at Disney Springs then catching a boat on the river to Port Orleans Resort. During the pandemic, you might need to place a mobile food order at the resort to get on board.
11) Disney’s Resort Monorail – After parking for free at Disney Springs you can take a bus to any of the resorts along the Monorail line: the Contemporary Resort, Polynesian Village Resort, or Grand Floridian Resort. Riding the monorail is fun if you’ve never tried it before, and if you admire Disney theming, you may enjoy checking out the themes at the different hotels.
12) Cocoa Beach – Take a drive out to enjoy one of the closest ocean beaches. Check to see if any launches are scheduled while you’ll be there.
13) Disney’s Wilderness Lodge – After parking for free at Disney Springs, you can hop on a bus to check out Disney’s Wilderness Lodge. From there you can also take a boat to Fort Wilderness Campground. If you enjoy campgrounds, it’s fun to see a Disney campground—some guests go all out decorating their sites, especially around the holidays.
14) Lake Eola Park – About 25 miles away, the fountain at Lake Eola Park is the icon you’ll see on a lot of Orlando posters and t-shirts. You’ll encounter a lot of interesting birds on a walk around the lake. Fun decorations during the holidays.
